10 Steps to Writing a Story – Broadcast Journalism

1. Find a __TOPIC_______.
-what is your school about?
- who is your audience?
- why is this story important to your audience?
EX: evhs football team, evhs have a water fountain with juice coming out?

2. Find an ______ANGLE_____.
-what about your topic?
- what is important?
- what should the reader learn?
- summarize in 3 words: subject, verb, object?
- EX: CLASS MISSES STUDENTS

3. Collect ____INFORMATION____________.
- who are the experts of this story?
- do you need opposing points of view?
- what interview questions should i ask?
-what other research must be done to complete the story?

4. Conduct the ____INTERVIEW____________.
- ask open ended question?
- rule of silent?
- ask none question question?

5. Shoot your reporter ______STAND-UP_________.
- should have a good idea what story is about
-stand-up should provide information that audience doesn't know
-use stand-up for transition one location to the next
-no first person:i went
-in middle of story

6. Organize your        SOUND BYTES                             .
- what quotes should i use?
-how can i organized the qoutes to tell a story?
-what are my golden nuggets?

7. Write ___SEGUES___________ in your story.
-use words that tie the interviews together
-what other information can you add to the story?
-can the story stand on its own?

8. Write the __BEGINING____ and _____END______ of your story.
- write body first
- best sound bytes for begining and end
- paraphrase a sound byte at the begining
- leave them with strongest sound byte at end
-leave them with hope
